Sealants can be very effective at preventing decay on your premolars and molars. The grooves in these areas make them the most vulnerable to cavities. Sealants are usually applied to the permanent molars or premolars of children as soon as they come in. Sealants are a great way to protect teeth during the period of time when they are most susceptible to cavities, ages 6-14. Sealants can be beneficial to adults who do not have decay or fillings on their molars.
Sealants are easy to apply. Follow these steps to apply sealants:
- The teeth are thoroughly cleaned
- The teeth have dried
- The chewing surfaces are treated with a liquid solution
- A special curing lamp is used to cure the solution
Sealants protect enamel against plaque and acids. Sealants can last several years without needing to be reapplied. The tooth surface is protected against decay as long as the sealant is intact.
Sealants do not replace brushing teeth. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential, as well as keeping up with regular dental cleanings. Sealants don’t protect the space between teeth, so you must continue to floss every day.
