What are the Types of Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are available in a wide variety of materials, each with its own pros and cons.

Gold Fillings

While gold fillings are often the most expensive choice, many consider them to be the best filling material, as they are well-tolerated by gum tissues and can last up to 15 years.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam (silver) fillings are a less expensive option that offer many of the same benefits as gold. However, they are more noticeable than porcelain or composite restorations and are not recommended for visible areas, such as the front teeth.

Composite Resin Fillings

Resin fillings are usually chosen for visible teeth, such as the front teeth, because they can be matched to the exact color of the natural teeth. However, composite fillings usually only last between 3 and 10 years, and may not be ideal for large cavities, as they may chip or wear over time.

Porcelain fillings

Also called inlays, porcelain fillings are tooth-colored fillings that resist staining, are extremely long-lasting, and are nearly undetectable to the untrained eye. The primary drawback of porcelain fillings is that they are usually about the same cost as gold fillings.
